General Motors Unveils New Electric Truck For The Logistics Industry

General Motors, popularly known as GM, recently unveiled a new electric truck designed as a delivery van to serve the delivery goods market. The van is the first of many new EV that will emerge in the automobile market in 2021 and the coming years. GM ventures further into the electric market after the unveiling of the 2022 electric GMC Hummer EV back in October of 2020.

The company’s new delivery vehicle will come under a newly established company called BrightDrop. The company is dedicated to serve the logistics and shipping industry, with BrightDrop using GM’s battery powered vehicles to increase global sustainability efforts starting in 2021. The company, which was officially unveiled at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show, offers a new generation for the logistics industry, especially as consumer demands for carbon neutral shipping options has continued to grow in recent times.

BrightDrop offers a smarter way to deliver goods and services,” said GM CEO Mary Barra in a press release. “We are building on our significant expertise in electrification, mobility applications, telematics and fleet management, with a new one-stop-shop solution for commercial customers to move goods in a better, more sustainable way,” the statement read.

GM also recently announced that the company would invest $27 billion into developing electric vehicles in the coming years, with a promise to deliver 30 models of electric vehicles by 2025. Factors such as stricter global emissions regulations have created a surge in the demand for electric vehicles, and pushes for climate action in countries like the US will further increase demand in the near future.

BrightDrop was created to help GM meet those goals, providing much-needed sustainability in an industry that seems forgotten about among consumers. The new electric delivery van, called the EV600, will weigh less than 10,000 pounds, allowing drivers to go about 250 miles on a full charge. The vehicle will also come with fast charge options, enabling it to earn 170 miles per hour of charging. The cargo vans are reported to have the capacity to carry up to 200 pounds of cargo inside of a 23 cubic-foot cargo hold.

Leading logistics company, Federal Express, will receive 500 of the electric vans this year, with plans to improve sustainability across business to business sectors in 2021. The company will also be implementing delivery logistics for the COVID-19 vaccine. Consequently, the electric vehicles will play a major role in a successful vaccine rollout throughout the next year.
