Sarah lives in a small town in Florida and is seven years old. Williville is a town in which only white people live (up to now), so Sarah has never met someone from any other race than her own. The only people of colour she has seen are on tv or on the internet. In a little town like that, it is no wonder that the arrival of a new family causes a lot of excitement, esp. when it is an African-American family. They move into Sarah’s neighbourhood, and on the first day of school, Sarah meets the new family’s daughter, Angela. Angela has a hard time in the new school, and when Sarah sees that Angela is always alone, she decides to take the first step and becomes her friend. An exciting time of learning begins for both of them.
The children’s book “MOMMY, WHY COME?” by Shirley Blount is dedicated to all the kids of different colors, races, abilities, and backgrounds. The author would like them to understand that they are special, and that they don’t have to look like or be like anyone else. It is a great story to read to or with your children, so you can discuss the events with them after you have finished the story. It is a book that encourages children, makes them understand they they are always enough, and that they should also celebrate their small successes – it contains many life lessons that are not only important for children.
