All around health is a priority at Palmdale School District and part of the Palmdale PROMISE to bring the best to each student. To this end, physical education, health education, efforts to improve mental health, health promotions to staff, and an increase in the attempt to improve a healthy school environment for all campuses is at the forefront of Palmdale’s endeavors.
The Physical Education provided to K-12 students provides learning experiences in a variety of areas like basic movement skills, physical fitness, dance,sports, games, tumbling, gymnastics, and aquatics. This type of quality physical education, taught by specially trained teachers, will promote each student’s optimum physical, mental, emotional, and social development, and should promote activities and sports that all students enjoy and can pursue throughout their lives.
Health Education curriculum for K-12 students in Palmdale School District addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of health. The curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and reduce health-related risk behaviors. As students get older, age appropriate topics such as sexuality education, mental and emotional health, prevention and control of disease, and substance use and abuse is taught by excellent qualified teachers. Registered Credentialed School Nurses support the focus on health promotion, and are available to assist students and staff, providing health education, screenings, and counseling, to identify, manage, and reduce barriers to learning. A huge push for mental, emotional, and social health has also meant that counselors and psychologists are available to help students.
Palmdale School District has also provided opportunities for school staff to improve their health status through activities such as health assessments, health education and health-related fitness activities. These opportunities have encouraged many staff members to pursue a healthy lifestyle that contributes to the health conscious school campuses in Palmdale. Health promotion activities in the District have improved productivity, decreased absenteeism, and reduced health insurance costs.
Palmdale is also focused on providing a healthy physical environment for students to learn in. Facilities are being updated, biological or chemical agents that may be harmful are kept in check, and factors like temperature, noise, and lighting are taken into consideration for the best learning environment. Palmdale School District dates back to the late 1800s when German and Swiss families emigrated to the area and called it “Palmenthal” after mistaking the local Joshua trees in the area for palm trees. Now serving the majority of the city of Palmdale, California, the district has approximately 19,000 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
